The Independent Greek Orthodox Church of the United States *

We are a group of Eastern Orthodox Christians who find themselves at odds with the mainline, establishment Church. We believe that it is time that our Holy Faith moves into the modern world.

For too long, our Holy Church has been a light hidden under an avalanche of Ethnic boulders, buried in social ideas long outdated, and not shining forth as is the command of Our Lord. We believe that on the doorstep of the 21st Century, we must show that we are the ancient and modern faith, holding fast to the true teaching of Christ. We are ancient Christianity unclouded by the heresies and divisions of the West. The Orthodox Church is the repository of the Truths as pr ofessed by 2000 years of Tradition; while listening to the needs of the New Millennium.img2.jpg

We recognize that the Orthodox Church is the vibrant, living vehicle of the Holy Spirit in the world. As the Living Church, it (she) is under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and is not static…or unchanging. As the young Church evolved an d grew throughout its first century, so it continues to evolve and grow today, as the Holy Spirit directs and leads it . But the question comes to mind is many of her children listening? She cannot be governed by fear of the foreigner, or fear of the new any longer.

As the Church grew and became a presence in the culture and the world of it’s time in decency and order established guidelines for her children and clergy these “rules and regulations” that is, Canons were laid down to govern the Church, and to bring all people to salvation (theosis). Some of these rules were to define what the Christian Church was to believe and these are Eternal Truths. These Truths discuss the Nature of God, the Incarnation of His Son, and the position of the Holy Spirit. They define our relationship to the Theotokos, and her relationship to her Son.

The Canons include those Truths as set out by the Nicene Creed and defined by the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The Canons also deal with defining the Orthodox Church as THE Body of Christ). As Orthodox Christians we believe them with the fullness of Faith.

Many more canons were made in a specific time and place; and many of them were meant for a 10th Century Agrarian Society.  These canons are seen as helping the Church in a specific time and place.  They dealt with social issues in that time and place.  The mindset of the 10th Century is quite different from the mindset of today; and these rules dealing with non-faith issues, must be looked at in light of the knowledge of the 21st Century.

We see these two sets of Canons as having different importance in today’s world.  Those Canons that define our Faith are immutable and eternal. They are the Traditions of the Church.

Those Canons that define the discipline and social workings of the Church are open to discussion.  As knowledge progresses, so to the Church progresses. They are the traditions of the Church.

The Diocese is comprised of one organization, The Protection of the Holy Theotokos Skete in Albuquerque, NM.
